The 2nd trimester ultrasound examination is performed between the 20th and 24th week of gestation to detect potential problems in the foetus’ anatomy; it also examines minor anomalies or chromosomal anomaly markers, determines the risk of premature delivery, preeclampsia and intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR). The examination determines the growth/development and health of the foetus based on:
- Detailed biometric data and estimation of the foetus’ weight
- Placenta check
- Imaging of the position and composition of the placenta
- Detailed check of all foetal organs (for potential congenital anomalies).
