Electromyogram

This is a diagnostic examination that complements the clinical examination and laboratory investigation. Measuring the velocity of nerve conduction (electroneurogram) and the electromyogram assess disorders/lesions of the nerves and/or muscles. The usual symptoms that lead to performing an electromyogram are numbing, muscular weakness, involuntary muscle contractions, etc. Conditions that might lead to the symptoms above and can be assessed with electromyography are peripheral nerve neural network diseases of any aetiology, radiculopathy, etc.

The examination uses electrode leads attached to the scalp to record brain electrical/electric activity. Electromyograms are also used to diagnose and monitor epilepsy and other focal or diffuse brain lesions. It is part of the investigation of conditions leading to loss of consciousness, dizziness, memory disorders, etc.

Procedure

The person to be examined sits comfortably on a chair and has surface electrode leads placed on specific points of the scalp with the help of a special gel. Hair needs to have been recently washed and clean without any hair sprays, gels or other similar products. The person may not speak or move, unless it is absolutely necessary.

Preparation

  • Wear comfortable clothes
  • Remove metal objects (watch, rings etc)

Restrictions on the examination

You must inform your physician if the person examined:

  • is restless
  • is taking specific medication (sedatives etc.)
